How do I use PowerPoint 2003 for my PPT files and PowerPoint 2007 for my PPTX?

Multiple versions of Microsoft Office PowerPoint can co-exist on the same machine if you install them in the order of release. Between Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003, install PowerPoint 2003 before PowerPoint 2007. While installing PowerPoint 2007, ensure that you tell the installer to keep the existing PowerPoint 2003 and not delete/overwrite it.

After installing PowerPoint 2007, it will take over opening all presentation files including .pptx, .pptm, .ppsx, .ppsm, .potx, .potm, .ppt, .pps, .pot. The following steps will make PowerPoint 2003 associate .ppt, .pps, .pot file extensions with itself while keeping the PowerPoint 2007-specific file formats (.pptx, .pptm, .ppsx, .ppsm, .potx, .potm) for PowerPoint 2007:

  1. In Windows, select "Start" | "Run..." menu item to bring up the Run dialog box.

  2. Type in the following command in the "Open" box:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\PowerPnt.exe" /regserver

  3. Click OK button.
