Tip: Change color of a shape within a group (PowerPoint 2003 only)

Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 allows you to select a shape within a group. After selecting the shape, its fill color, fill pattern, line color and line pattern can be changed through the standard PowerPoint interfaces. This would keep the animation effects, action settings, sound effects, etc. on the group intact. The following are step-by-step instructions to do that:

  1. Lets say that a Rectangle, Sun and Oval are grouped together. This group when selected could look like:

  2. Click on the Sun. The selected would change to look like:

  3. Select Format | AutoShape... menu item.
  4. Change the fill color to the one that you want. In this example, I have changed it to Red color. The Sun would now look like:

  5. The animation effects, action settings, sound effects, etc. that are on the group shape would stay intact.
