Tip: Rotate a shape within a group (PowerPoint 2003 only)

The ProTools Shape Properties toolbar shows the angle of a shape. The angle is in degrees. Setting the value, rotates the shape. The equivalent way to do this in PowerPoint is to go through the following series of steps:

  1. Select Format | AutoShape... menu item.
  2. Select the Size tab.
  3. Set the value in the Rotation box.
  4. Click OK button.

In PowerPoint 2003, OfficeOne ProTools for PowerPoint allows you to rotate a shape even when it is within a group. This would keep the animation effects, action settings, sound effects, etc. on the group intact while still allowing the individual shape within the group to be manipulated. The following are step-by-step instructions to do that:

  1. Lets say that a Rectangle and Oval are grouped together. This group when selected could look like:

  2. The ProTools Shape Properties toolbar would look like:

  3. Lets say that we want to rotate the Rectangle in this group to 45 degrees. Select the Rectangle shape from the Shape Name dropdown box in ProTools Shape Properties toolbar:

  4. The last box in ProTools Shape Properties toolbar is the Rotation angle of the shape. It is set at 0 at present. Set it to 45:

  5. The group would now look like:

  6. We have rotated the rectangle. The animation effects, action settings, sound effects, etc. that are on the group shape would stay intact.
